Unoaked Chardonnay – Wine Store Sections We\’d Really Like To See

\"unoaked\"
On a recent trip to Ohio I saw an Unoaked Chardonnay section at a wine store. This is the kind of sections, and honesty, more stores should have. Send us your suggestions for what you would like to see. Here are some ideas from our group:

Lyle Fass: Restrained California Reds

Greg Wacks: Grapes You\’ve Never Heard of

Adam Morganstern: $15 Wines That Are Better Than Our $50 Wines

Evan Spingarn: Chillable Reds

  1. How about all 14%+ alcohol wines in their own section?

  2. I agree Adam. Thankfully it’s becoming a trend. Check out WineSmith’s Faux Chablis (www.winesmith.com) for an unoaked chardonnay. Also a couple of Finger Lakes wineries are doing it – Hermann Wiemer’s is quite good.

  3. The “unoaked Chardonnay” in the picture is called “Toasted Head” and it is not unoaked. It’s actually oaked to death and beyond. It’s oaked to Dante’s seventh level of hell. That either is a big FAIL on the store’s part or the section starts right below those wines.

Another category: Wines like Pinot Grigio – I think it would be huge for Pinot Grigio drinkers who are afraid to expand their horizons. Have it right next to the Pinot Grigio section.

Hmmm, looking at the original photo the Unoaked Section may be refering to the wines underneath, and above may just be storage space (and an unfortunate coincidence). I do think though that “Oaked to Dante’s Seventh level of hell” would be another good section. As well as the Wines like Pinot Grigio.
